How You Can Help

                                                    Community Members/Supporters
  • Post a Connections flyer (found under the Flyers/Forms tab) at your work, visible to the public.
  • Tell people about National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)/ NAMI Virginia and that an affiliate is being created in this area. Please reference this website if they would like more information.
  • Tell people about our Connections support group and possible Family to Family classes.
  • Join NAMI (anyone can join NAMI).
  • Donate (needed items): Styrofoam cups (or dish soap, to wash coffee mugs), coffee, creamer, sugar, or money. If you would like to donate one of these items, please email us.
  • Learn more about various mental illnesses and be patient with those who have one. You can pick up booklets and brochures about various mental illnesses from The Crisis Center or at one of our events; they are free.
  • Advocate for more funding for mental health by writing state and district legislatures.

                                                         Persons with Mental Illness
  • Attend a Connections support group meeting.
  • Consider becoming a Peer to Peer mentor (see the Trainings tab).
  • Educate family, friends, and community members about your mental illness.

  • Advocate for more funding for mental health by writing state and district legislatures.


                                           Family Members of People with Mental Illness
  •  Attend a Family Support Group meeting.
  • Consider becoming a Family Support Group facilitator (see the Trainings tab).
  • If you are a parent, or caregiver, of a child who was diagnosed with or showed signs of mental illness or a developmental disability, such as Autism, before age 13, consider becoming a Basics Education teacher (see the Trainings tab).
  • Educate family, friends, and community members about your loved one's mental illness.
